SWADESI was formed in the year 2006 at Theni (Tamil Nadu) as a Cottage Industry. As the name implies, we are committed to totally Indian and Gandhian way of using our own natural resources and producing Eco-friendly products.  Our products revive Gandhian thoughts in contemporary style.  The raw materials  used in our products are khadi, jute,  kora grass,  banana fibers and Indian herbs. SWADESI supports and trains self help groups (SHGs) and socially backward women to produce its products. 

On  this  background  we train women  in manufacturing  handicraft products from  Nature Fibres with designs and products developed by swadesi.  Over 40  artisans from different Self Help Groups from the southern states of Tamil Nadu , have been identified for the Introduction of basic skills and also to make  different products using available raw material . 

The present Production Capacity is to manufacture  100 storage boxes, 4 shopping bags, 40 cushions  per day. This may vary slightly based on the raw  material availability in  the local market  and   climatic conditions.


SWADESI is promoted by Ramya Ajay Raja. She had her training in Textile Design from Raheja college of arts, Bombay,  Hands on Training in Natural Dyeing at Gandhigram Dindigul,  and in fine arts at Kalakshetra Chennai.  Ramya, with her flair for Textile design and training in fine arts, transforms natural raw stock into usable and innovative products.
